Since its establishment in 1996, the Jewish Women’s Archive (JWA) has been dedicated to preserving and disseminating the narratives of numerous women both online and through diverse public initiatives. Continuing this mission, the archive consistently endeavors to unearth the compelling stories of remarkable women who have remained unchronicled, particularly those from marginalized segments within the Jewish community.

In 2017, bolstered by the generous backing of the Covenant Foundation, JWA initiated Story Aperture, an innovative and expandable undertaking aimed at gathering stories on a significant scale. This project encourages individuals to identify and interview Jewish women in their circles. Drawing upon years of expertise in oral history and a staunch dedication to amplifying the voices of all Jewish women, Story Aperture utilizes contemporary technology to capture and disseminate these narratives, ultimately enriching our shared comprehension of the experiences of self-identified Jewish women.

The concept behind the app's title, Story Aperture, is rooted in Barbara Myerhoff’s insightful observation that personal stories can act as gateways not only to individual lives but also to broader truths about the human condition.
